About Shane Bzdok
Hello
My name is Shane Bzdok. It’s pronounced, Biz-dock. Simple, right?
I was born in a small town in North Dakota and spent my early childhood on a 26-acre farm a couple of miles from town, immersed in nature, discovery, and creativity. I am the son of a grade-school teacher (mother) and mechanic/carpenter (father) turned photographer, artist, and graphic designer. It was because of my father that I was drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil.
In college, what started as a typography class where I was drawing letters by hand with a lead holder, quickly evolved into an obsession. To that end, I have devoted the better part of the last 30 years to improving upon my craft as a visual designer.
So, why am I here?
A constant companion to my passion for design is a love of writing. I’ve published the occasional industry article and often bring writing to bear in my design projects. But while I enjoy that type of non-fiction writing, I could no longer ignore the pull to write as an escape, something born entirely of imagination. So on the cusp of turning 50, I decided to focus more of my time and energy on writing fiction. Specifically, stories that play out in the various subrealms of speculative fiction. I’ve got a lot to learn and am constantly inspired by the talent on this platform.
Why subscribe?
Do you enjoy original science fiction, dystopian tales, and horror stories with endings that sometimes result in more questions than answers? I am admittedly still finding my voice, but tend to lean into themes involving loss, a departure from home, and the strangeness of twins. As a designer, I like to think that I write very vivid, atmospheric scenes. I will be posting mostly in short, flash, and micro form.
